Unity through Diversity
Will we get to a better place? These days, listening to the news is depressing. It scares me. I fear we may never come together. Is there hope for us?
My day did not go as planned. I did not anticipate a short YouTube video would lead to another, then another, then another, and somewhere more than 10 videos later, discovering a video series that would energize me, entertain me, and inspire me.
The “Between Worlds” series by Jubilee brings together unique artists (diversity) and challenges them to create a performance together (unity). They are very different. I’m not kidding. Pole dancer with violinist. Beatboxer with African dancers. Ballerina with street dancer. Hip-hop producer with opera singer. Graffiti artist with wildlife painter. And, my favorite, a string quartet with mariachi band.
None of them gave up who they are, yet managed to create something entirely new and inspiring. Instead of clashing, they created. Instead of a performance showing their separate talents, they collaborated to highlight both of their unique gifts. Somehow, their diversity led to an otherwise-unachievable unity. Somewhere in this is a lesson for me. Maybe you. Perhaps even all of us Americans given the state of affairs today.
Is there hope for us? This series reminds me that what’s inside us is powerful enough to unite us. Yes, there is hope for us. We are better together than apart.
