Martin Luther King | Courage over obstacles

I just finished Martin Luther King’s autobiography. A must read. Not only did I learn things I didn’t know, but I was also inspired. We can understand so much about leadership from him: Courage, purpose, faith, clarity, communication, and connection. Hear this from him: “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.”

It’s a compelling story told from his own perspective: A collection of his writings and speeches pieced together to tell his story. I especially appreciated the audiobook version since it included recordings of his speeches where available (some which have never been publicly available). You can hear him deliver his poetic oratory himself. You can’t listen and avoid being changed.

One of the most powerful quotes I captured: “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles; Cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances. Courage breeds creativity; Cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it. Cowardice asks the question, ‘Is it safe?’ Expediency asks the question, ‘Is it politic?’ Vanity asks the question, ‘Is it popular?’ But conscience asks the question, ‘Is it right?’ And there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.”
