Be culture

Chris Hodges says, “You can’t build culture. You have to be culture.” When you think about it, it make sense. But, so many times leaders create campaigns with committees and project plans to change their organization’s culture. This usually results in superficial changes that don’t last long. Culture is not a process or policy. It’s not a mantra. Pep rallies won’t get the ball across the goal. Culture is woven into the fabric of the people who make up the organization, in their attitude, disposition, outlook, and values, all of which inform their actions. These can’t be changed by a project plan.

  1. Leaders, you change culture by changing yourself. As you change, those around you change. Influence is powerful. Modeling is powerful. As it has been said, become the change you want to see in the world. Live it.
  2. Your headlines should be about the attitudes and behaviors you want, not the changes to get there. Don’t talk about “culture” and the “change.” Don’t create a program, campaign, or committee labeled “culture.” Instead, talk about the actual behaviors and attitudes you want to see. And by all means, show them through your own actions and attitudes. Celebrate when you see them in others, but not in a PR campaign. Highlight customer stories where employees lived out the culture you want to see.
  3. Don’t try to change everything all at once. Prioritize based on impact.
  4. This kind of change begins inside out. Focus on the heart first. Once the heart embraces a change, the rest will follow.
